Grad School FFFFFFUUUUUUU

Sometime back in late March/early April of this year, I randomly decided I wanted to go to grad school, so I scheduled an appointment to take the GRE, studied 45 minutes for it, applied for the ISDS masters program, and now I’m back in school. I thought I was done tagging posts with the “college” tag, but I guess I have another two and a half years of that (if my poor blog lasts that long).

Anyway, I haven’t updated in a while (surprise, surprise), so it’s catch up time. Back in July, a good bit of my family flew to North Carolina to spend a week at my brother’s cabin. It’s pretty awesome up there (except for the spotty cell phone coverage :P ).

That’s me on Chimney Rock. The view was awesome. :)

That’s the sunset over the lake my brother’s cabin is on. Yeah, it was really pretty.

I got to fly in an airplane, ride on crazy curvy mountain roads, swim in a mountain lake, and go white water rafting; all things I’ve never done before. It was pretty awesome. If I ever get to go again, I want to take my car so I can drive on those roads. :P

I’ve been writing a good bit lately (for fun, not for school/work). I’m just shy of 40,000 words on “Business As Usual,” which I’m trying to get to novel status (50,000) during editing. Also, I decided I don’t like that title. :\

My web hosting expires in about 27 days, and I don’t think I’m going to renew it. My friend James offered to host my site for me, and since I don’t really use it as much as I used to, I may just take him up on the offer and save myself some money.

I recently posted this on Facebook and on reddit (where I got my highest upvote count ever), so I’m going to put it here too so anyone that still reads this can watch it and get all nostalgic all over it with me.

What would one of my updates be without random embedded YouTube videos of music I’ve been listening to? In case you haven’t realized it yet, I like electro-*anything*, and these videos are proof.

Who is that?

I had a pretty awesome experience Sunday night as I watched the New Orleans Saints beat the Minnesota Vikings from some pretty good seats right in the Superdome.

However, that does not mean I am okay with this “Who dat?” thing. This is why it has to go:

1) It sounds extremely uneducated. Do we, as members of a state that already gets made fun of for being uneducated, really want to further the propagation of that stereotype?

2) “But it’s part of our culture!”

Exactly what part of our cultural heritage, pray tell, does this awful phrase pay homage to? Perhaps our rich French heritage? I’m sure when they were leaving Acadia during Le Grand Dérangement, all they could say was “Who dat?”

Seriously, it’s a stupid phrase someone made up. You can’t try to glorify it by attaching some sort of false cultural meaning. (And if you’re going to try to argue with me that butchering the English language is part of our heritage, then I kindly invite you to move somewhere else and lower that state’s average IQ instead of ours).

3) “But it boosts team morale/intimdates the other team!”

I’m sorry, can we not accompish that with a phrase that sounds a little more educated? Personally, I like the “Here we come to get you” chant that they do at every Saints kickoff. In the dome, that was far more intimidating than people shouting “Who dat?”

4) It is ridiculously easy to turn around.

“who dat say dey gon’ beat dem Saints?!”

Uh, The Dallas Cowboys? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers? The Carolina Panthers?

Please feel free to throw arguments at me so that I may debunk them. :)

Spent about three hours washing Evey and blacking out the bowties on Saturday.

Other than that, I’ve not been doing a whole lot. I saw Ninja Assassin last week and it was pretty good relative to what I was expecting. Lot of blood and ownage. :D

I also saw both of the Twilight movies, and…unfortunately…I liked them. :(

And now for the obligatory “what I’ve been listening to” part of the post. I have been into electronic stuff pretty hardcore lately, and my latest kick is electro-hop, which is – as it sounds – electronic hip-hop. I’ve never taken hip-hop lyrics seriously, but I’m really digging this genre (it helps that I love keytars :D ).

The band I’m enjoying the most is Hyper Crush. This video is for their song “The Arcade.” It’s pretty much about how awesome old school video games were, I guess. hahahaha.

I love the Mercedes emblem around Donny’s neck, the shirt Preston (the keytarist) is wearing, and the Super Mario Bros. video in the background with Megaman instead of Mario. :P

The Key to Snow

Evey in the snow last Friday.

Evey in the snow

Every in the snow

Okay, yeah, it was a pretty weak snow, but…it was cool nonetheless. It’s a lot easier to see in this video that I took under a lamppost.

Also, I’ve been meaning to share this for a while, but I kept forgetting. It’s a very short video of the key to my Camaro. Just so I don’t get any smartass comments, I know Volkswagon did this first, but it’s genius and every new car should have this kind of key.

On a final note about cars, I have six Camaro Hot Wheels cars. I’m collecting them. :D

I’ve been listening to one of Fall Out Boy’s new songs, “From Now On We Are Enemies,” a heck of a lot. It’s about the composer Antonio Salieri being jealous of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart because he thought Mozart was very undeserving of his fame because of his lifestyle (as far as I can tell). It’s a great song and another of Pete Wentz’s fits of lyrical genius.

Song plus lyrics:

That’s all for now. Media overload! :D

That’s her name. She’s a 2010 Rally Yellow 2LT/RS Camaro.

Smoothies in Houma

In Houma this past weekend, I was driving by the new Little Caesar’s when I saw a sign that said “Smoothie Rox”. Needless to say, I turned without even thinking about it. Anyone that reads this probably knows that I enjoy a good smoothie, so let me tell you…that place has good smoothies.

It’s pretty much exactly like Fruity Tropical Smoothie that closed about a year ago in Baton Rouge, except with less weird flavors (they don’t have red bean smoothies, for example, but they do have avacado).

I got a strawberry/raspberry/pomegranate smoothie on Saturday and a kiwi smoothie on Sunday. I highly recommend it if you’re in Houma.

Yes, I am a Nerd

What of it?

(Baked that earlier today.)

Quick iPhone crap: Apple retail is awesome. They exchanged my iPhone case for another one that wasn’t messed up, no questions asked. Also, iPhone apps are amazing. There is simply no other mobile platform like it. I’ve actually been buying apps!

The Internet is awesome. There are some people that scoff at coupons, but while they’re scoffing, I’m saving money. I went to Wal-Mart today and saved ~$9 with coupons. Yesterday, Keith and I went to the mall and I found some shoes I liked at Steve Madden for $80. I went home, went to stevemadden.com and bought the exact same pair of shoes with a 30% off + free shipping coupon and saved $30. Seriously, the Internet pays for itself sometimes.

After my party a couple of weeks ago, Chris’ girlfriend Miranda picked up some 2 liters of soda that were left over, and after fighting with this bottle of Mountain Dew for the past week, I simply couldn’t get it open. I ended up cutting a hole in the bottle. In short, I’ve been emasculated by a girl, but at least she has a black belt in karate, and that makes me feel slightly better about it, hahaha.

I am thinking about donating some money to a charity. I want it to be a charity that’s close to my heart, and you guys know what I like, so suggestions are appreciated.

I know when I post about music, people probably stop reading or don’t watch/listen to the videos I post, but I have two videos to post and if you don’t watch the first one, you’re missing out and that’s all there is to it. The artist is “Lights” (it’s a one girl band comprised of Valerie Poxleitner) and the song is called “Ice.” It’s some of the best synth pop I’ve ever heard.

The following song is called “Don’t Trust Me” by 3OH!3. It’s really catchy, but the lyrics don’t really have much substance. I don’t recommend you watch this one nearly as much as I recommend the first one, but this is a really freaking catchy song (the video is kind of NSFW…nothing worse than a JCPenney catalog though).

3OH!3 is an “electronica/crunk” band. The rest of their music is electronic hip-hop. It’s pretty weird.

My posts are just random thought-streams these days. I’m not sure if that’s different than it used to be (or if it’s a good/bad thing), but I have a feeling I can blame it on Twitter (or @waruikoohii #wado).

I Chime In…

I have a lot of catching up to do, but I really doubt I’ll cover everything I originally intended to cover.

I had a party last weekend. It was quite epic, and lots of fun was had.

That’s my favorite picture, though I wish more people were in it, cause that’s not even half. My friends are pretty awesome. :D I wish we could do stuff like that more often.

I also went to the Chimes twice last weekend, once on Friday night and once on Sunday morning. (The Chimes * 2) + awesome friends + party = super win.

I know I write enough about Buckle here, but sometimes I just feel like they deserve the praise. I looked for months and months for a pair of pants I could wear to work that wouldn’t make me feel like I was 40 years old. Namely, something that wasn’t big and baggy – pants are supposed to fit, not hang off of you, and that’s mostly why I hate Dockers/slacks/dress pants. I finally found a pair of pants that are suitable for work, and of course, I found them at Buckle. Those pants combined with my realization that American Eagle Vintage Fit Eagle Polos are *awesome* has led to my work attire moving from “frustrating and depressing” to “I pretty much feel normal now,” except tucking in my shirt still annoys the ever living crap out of me. I Tweeted this before, but I think it deserves repeating: whoever came up with the idea of tucking your shirt into your pants seriously needs to be punched in the face. It doesn’t make any sense when you really think about it.

And this is really sad, but I can’t think of anything else I wanted to say. *sigh*

Oh yeah, this is about 3 months late, but happy 5 year anniversary to my blog. “Phil’s Waste-of-Bandwidth Website” was born in late March of 2004 and turned into inphiltrate.com about a year later.

Wayback Machine Archive of the first or second version of inphiltrate (highlight the main frame to see the blog posts). I actually still have the entire site backed up. I should throw it up in a subdirectory so you can all laugh at my retarded “OMG I HAVE TO BLOG EVERY DAY OR I FAIL” posts.

I Climb Buoys

I had written the majority of an update on Friday, but I decided against posting it for now. Maybe some other time.

On Friday, Adam and I went to hang out at Keith Carroll’s. We made a trip to Whole Foods, where I got some kind of amazing key lime cheesecake that was so amazing that I have to use the word “amazing” again: amazing!

I wish I could wear whatever I want to work. I feel so out of character in “business casual” attire. The button down shirts are fine (I wear those out of work too), but I hate slacks and having my shirt tucked in. Curse you, real life. :P Thank God for casual Fridays! :D

I’m on a boat!
